Four of the top gymnasts in the city, shine in the sunshine state USA

Arabian gymnasts Bearly struggle in the sunshine state

The San Diego Friendship cup Invitational was held at the Victory Gymnastic academy on Saturday 24th July 2010. Arabian Gymnasts Jess Wright (15) Bex Whatmore (16) Sam Gavrovski (19) and Lucy Johnston (12) performed brilliantly in the wonderful Southern California settings.
The hosts had managed to gain some exceptional quality in the judging panels which included their very own head judge Nicole Harris. In a tense  atmosphere the girls showed some early nerves as they suddenly found themselves being watched by a well presented crowd that had heard of the English girls visit.
Larry Anhorn the head coach had to allow spectators to sit in and around the gym itself which brought the crowd close up to the events going on. Between each rotation Larry and Victory gymnastic club has carefully planned a display of tumbling on their fast tumble track to keep the audience latched on and entertained.
Also  Larry also threw caution to the wind when he also played some high quality girls who were otherwise injured and strapped up, a few chosen words from Larry and Nicole seemed to pull their girls through and they performed with passion taking on the experinced English gymnasts.
Lucy Johnston managed a super 7th placing for her floor routine which had a new tumble pass which she learned here in Victory gym club. Lucy also came 6th on beam and Bars and took 8th place on Vault and overall came 8th overall.
Jess Wright came 2nd on beam where she had a clean routine sticking everything like a second coming , Her floor took 8th place, 7th on Bars and took bronze for her vault overall finished  6th place
Bex Whatmore who yet again hurt her toe in warm up bravely continued despite it being slightly swollen and clearly sore, she  was to perform a new acrobatic connected series on beam but Alan decided it best to leave it. She came 7th on vault with her piked tsuk, 4th on the bars, 3rd on floor and 3rd on beam. overall she finished in 3rd place

Sam Gavrovski, who like Bex had an injured toe, also a pulled calf muscle and a double rip on her hand and a sore jaw from  a whip lash landing the night prior had mixed results. Sam performed  a tucked tsuk for the first time in years giving her 2nd place. A fall from bars and a watered down routine gave her 5th place but she still managed a new twisting somersaulting dismount, she then bounced back after this disappointment to take 1st place on beam and also 1st place on floor giving her the 2010 title of California San Diego Invitation cup Champion 2010.
The presentation was carried out with medals being issued also a plaque to each gymnast who finished in the top 8. And also the top 8 gymnasts received a California teddy bear each too.
This brings an end to the gymnastics, where the girls have had a most amazing week training every evening of the week and then finishing off with this wonderful final.
Arabian girls have gained a great deal from this trip, new moves , new ideas and new friendship with some outstanding caring people who have given so much to ensure the girls had a fun packed week.
Alan he Arabian  head coach said
"I was asked the other day what i had enjoyed the most out of the trip, gosh what a really hard question to answer, with seeing a Panda close up, feeding a giraffe too...but really for me and i do believe the gymnasts too the outstanding element of this trip is meeting Larry, Nicole and Shawna and their partners and family....such genuine people and we are amazed at the similarity of the two clubs in Victory and Arabian. Our approach to teaching is near on identical which is amazing. To each and everyone of you we owe you a huge and massive thank you.
Larry Anhorn is just the most amazing human being and wonderful coach with great humour, he helped me sooo much supporting my girls due to my shoulder restriction. The beautiful and brilliant gymnast/coach of Nicole Harris who near on killed the girls on Monday with her terrific and enthusiastic work out..a really wonderful lovely warm person who we will miss greatly. She never failed to make me laugh and smile ... her personality is awesome. x
Shawna the boss the lady who would not allow the girls to get their purses out, the lady who opened her gym club to us and tonight her stunning home where a Miss Monroe used to meet a certain president as their secret lair...what a home what a wonderful sincere and lovely lady with husband and two just great daughters to boot....to you all we are truly grateful"
These trips away could never take place without the support and huge effort of many coaches back home who are running the shop and making sure everything is ok, Donna who oversees everything has been the main pin on ensuring this trip took place and was hugely inspirational when Alan came into logistic difficulty whilst stopped over in Texas. To Donna especially a massive thank you.xx
